Karl Fast works on problems for a world with abundant information, cheap computation, and pervasive networks. He currently pursues this work with Normative, a software design studio in Toronto, where he is Director of Information Architecture.
He is currently writing a book called "Design for Understanding" with the designer Stephen Anderson. It will be published later this year by Rosenfeld Media.
Karl is a former professor of User Experience Design at Kent State University, where he was instrumental in building one of the first online graduate programs in the field. He has taught graduate courses on information visualization, information architecture, human-information interaction, and many other topics. He holds a PhD from the University of Western Ontario, where he studied the cognitive benefits of interacting with visual representations.
Karl is a founding member of the Information Architecture Institute. He is a long-time contributor to the Information Architecture Summit, and has been an invited speaker at user experience events across North America, as well as Europe and Australia.
He is based in Minneapolis, where he lives with his family.
