Stephen is a behavioral social scientist who studies financial behavior, and how digital products can help individuals manage their money more effectively. Steve serves as Head of Behavioral Science at Morningstar, a leading provider of independent investment research, where he leads a team of behavioral scientists and practitioners to conduct original research on savings and spending behavior.
He is the author of both Improving Employee Benefits (September 2014) and Designing for Behavior Change (November 2013). The first book gives step-by-step instructions on how to develop products that help users take action: from exercising more to learning a new language. His second book examines why employees fail to use their benefits and how behavioral economics can help. Steve is also the President of the non-profit Action Design Network, which hosts an annual conference and monthly events in five cities for over 3500 practitioners applying behavioral research to product development.
He has two small and wonderful children, who don't care about behavioral science at all.
